The D. Barry Lumsden Endowment
Dr. D. Barry Lumsden (November 24, 1939 - June 14, 2011)
Professor Barry Lumsden had an impressive 36-year teaching career in higher education. Dr. Lumsden graduated from Emmaus Bible College in 1961, and then earned an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts in 1964 from Louisburg College. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University in the fall of 1964 and a Master of Science degree in Adult and Community College Education/Sociology in 1968. He began his decades-long career in higher education after receiving his doctorate in Education from North Carolina State University in 1970. Since then he taught at Lenoir Community College, N.C. State University, the University of Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of North Texas (27 years). He was a visiting professor at Baylor University in Texas, Harding University in Arkansas, and the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. He was also Senior Research Fellow at the University of Alabama. Most recently he held a position as a Senior Research Fellow at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Lumsden received numerous professional and teaching awards during his career. A scholarship fund has been started in his honor by two of his former students (currently faculty members) at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Professor Lumsden was Editor-in-Chief of the peer reviewed Community College Journal of Research and Practice which he founded 35 years ago. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the international peer reviewed journal Educational Gerontology which he founded 31 years ago. In 2000, he founded Christian Higher Education for which also served as Editor-in-Chief until his death.
A scholarship fund was set up in January 2011 by two of his former students (currently faculty members) in Barry’s honor at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Barry was very humbled and grateful for this honor. Upon learning that a scholarship was set up in his name he responded, “Rick, you have left me speechless. I don't know what to say. My gratitude defies adequate expression. Thank you! Thank you! thank you!”
