    This directory provides a list of graduate programs and professional development opportunities in the field of community colleges. It includes programs that offer leadership training to community college administrators, as well as research-focused, degree-granting programs for scholars in the field. Some institutions included have specific programs or departments related to community colleges (i.e. Community College Leadership) while others offer courses about community colleges as part of broader programs (i.e. Higher Education, Educational Leadership). University departments or programs with at least one faculty member who routinely conducts research on community colleges were included in the directory.

Program Emphasis: Antioch University McGregor offers a two-year, limited residency master of arts degree in management for community college professionals. The curriculum includes the traditional management disciplines, while focusing on issues relevant to community college professionals. The program takes place during the summer, fall, and winter quarters for two years. Courses are offered through a combination of face-to-face meetings during residential sessions in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and online study. Students attend one five-day residency each summer. Between residencies, students continue their studies at home, through individual and team efforts. Participation in professional development programs may be substituted for selected courses.

Program Emphasis: The CCLC doctoral program at Fielding offers the mature adult learner the opportunity to develop and enhance the various competencies that are needed to be a successful community college leader, while also mastering the doctoral-level competencies of a reflective scholar-practitioner. CCLC is aligned with the competencies for community college leaders as delineated by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Program Emphasis: The FAU higher education program specialization in educational leadership includes Ph.D., Ed.D. and M.Ed. degrees with a strong emphasis in leadership, experiential education and research. Doctoral graduates are required to complete 18 semester hours in leadership and 12 hours in experiential education. Masters graduate must complete 12 semester hours in leadership and 3 hours of experiential education. Courses are offered at night and on weekends with doctoral cohorts formed every few years. Most doctoral students are employed full time in higher education leadership positions and aspire to more responsive executive leaders positions.

Program Emphasis: The Community College Education program prepares students to be leaders in undergraduate education. Program Emphasis: The National-Louis University Community College Leadership (CCL) Doctoral program prepares key leaders to face the unique challenges found in community college settings. The CCL program is designed to allow doctoral students to continue meeting family and work responsibilities. The 65 credit program is three years in length including an integrated dissertation process. Students participate in regularly scheduled class sessions; day and time designed to meet the needs of each cohort and two summer sessions (two weeks each summer). Guided study over the Internet supports coursework. The CCL Program admits each fall and seeks a diverse cohort of approximately 15-20 learners. Program Emphasis: The major objective of the postsecondary education program is to prepare the instructor and other educational personnel for postsecondary educational institutions, industry, and public and private agencies engaged in the education and training of technicians and middle-level workers. Program Emphasis: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers the Community College Executive Leadership (CCEL) program, which is a weekend cohort program for working professionals throughout the state of Illinois. The program emphasizes theory, research, and practice pertinent to contemporary community college leadership, and graduates of this program assume positions of leadership from the presidency to the dean. Students interested in full-time Ph.D.studies on campus at UIUC can also enroll in the Higher Education program in the Department of EOL, with a specialization in CCL. In addition to programs having an administrative focus, students interested in professional developmment opportunities for community college faculty can enroll in the Community College Teaching and Learning (CCTL) Online program, offered by the Human Resource Education Department. Instituted as a non-degree program, CCTL offers the master's degree for students who complete all courses required for the degree, or a certificate for those completing one-half of the full program or four units (16 graduate hours).

Program Emphasis: The higher education specialization within the leadership studies program at USD offers a community college leadership emphasis within both the M.A. and Ed.D. degrees. The program offers further training for community college professionals, as well as master‚s and doctoral students whose research interests are related to community colleges. A new program, which will be in place in 2007, will offer weekend courses toward an MA in community college teaching, learning, and leading for faculty and junior administrators who seek advanced administrative training. Program Emphasis: The intent of the Ed.D. degree in College Leadership at the University of South Florida is to develop the competencies of educational practitioners in two- and four-year colleges and to obtain and synthesize knowledge for the solution of educational problems and practices. The Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration prepares individuals interested in teaching and research positions in community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. In addition, individuals who intend to pursue state and national policy positions are enrolled in both the Ed.D. and the Ph.D. programs, depending upon their areas of interest.

Higher education courses are offered on the main USF-Tampa campus or at off-campus sites in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. All classes are held in the evenings or on Saturdays, year round. A few selected support courses in the doctoral program (such as statistics) are typically scheduled on the Tampa campus during weekday evenings (not Saturdays).

Program Emphasis: The CCTL Online program is a professional development sequence for community college faculty seeking increased effectiveness in classroom instruction. The curriculum is designed to increase teaching effectiveness of faculty and build the instructional leadership of supervisory personnel. The Illinois Online Network (ION) is a partnership between the University of Illinois and forty-eight community colleges in Illinois to provide faculty development in the area of technology-enhanced and online teaching and learning for community college faculty. ION has provided online faculty training for over 1000 instructors with its Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) series of courses. The ten MVCR courses provide community college instructors the opportunity to experience the virtual classroom as a student, while learning about appropriate pedagogies and technologies for online instruction. Instructors who take six core courses, an elective, and the project-based Practicum receive the Master Online Teacher certificate awarded by the Illinois Online Network and University of Illinois Online. The instructors are current or former community college faculty who have taken MVCR courses themselves.
